Do you ever feel like your health is on the back burner? You’re not alone. Many men prioritize work and family, leaving their own well-being behind. Historically, only 60% of men will see a healthcare provider per year, with the remaining 40% waiting until there is a major issue before booking the appointment. This can lead to a whole host of issues down the road, from low energy and weight gain to more serious men’s health problems.
At Defy of Indiana, we want to encourage the men in our lives to step out of the shadows, take control of their health, and feel the absolute best they can. We explore many avenues with our male patients that alter the way they live their lives on a daily basis while slowing down the effects that aging has on men’s health.
At Defy of Indiana, we want to encourage the men in our lives to step out of the shadows, take control of their health, and feel the absolute best they can. We explore many avenues with our male patients that alter the way they live their lives on a daily basis while slowing down the effects that aging has on men’s health.
Five areas we can look at are:
1. Hormones aren’t only important for women!
As we age, our hormones start to fluctuate, causing a drop in testosterone levels up to 2%/year after the age of 40. Lower levels of just that single hormone can drastically affect men’s health, leading to erectile dysfunction, depression, reduced muscle mass, decreased energy, anxiety, trouble sleeping, focusing, and many more. Low testosterone can also affect unseen factors such as bone density, cardiovascular risks, and mental decline. A simple blood test can show us what deficiencies you have and help us create the best plan moving forward.
2. Get Moving!
When we don’t feel our best, it takes a lot to motivate ourselves to keep moving. But little things, like a walk around the block, a bike ride with your kids, or a game of pickleball with friends, will boost not only your energy and metabolism but also your mental health. Staying active is an important part of men’s health.
3. Fuel your body for peak performance!
Due to the reasons above, it is natural for us to gain a little more insulation, particularly around the midsection, as we age. This not only slows us down physically but also puts unnecessary stress on our organs. But there are ways to combat that! Aim to eat a protein-rich diet with a priority on fiber and vitamins while limiting your sugar intake. Soon, you will not only feel better but notice that you are trimming down.
4. Chill Out.
Listen, the stress men carry is often overlooked and underestimated, but there are ways to take some weight off your shoulders. By staying active, connecting with those around you, and disconnecting from your phone and work for a few hours at a time, you allow your brain to relax and be available to focus more at the pivotal moments when it is needed.
5. Sleep is important For Men’s Health!!
While it stands to reason that working late nights and early mornings makes you more productive, studies show that when you are well rested, your focus is sharpened, your mood is enhanced, and stress levels are lower. Take a break and rest your mind and body for a healthier and more productive you!
At your first appointment, we will do a deep dive into your medical history and what type of symptoms you are having that are making you feel sluggish, lack energy, pack on a few extra pounds, lose muscle mass, and experience a decreased sex drive. Then, we order a panel of labs that will give us the information we need to know what we are working with inside your body.
We meet with you a couple of weeks later to go over our findings, focusing not only on the normal ranges but the optimal ranges for your age and body type. Within that conversation, we will develop a plan to address your concerns for men’s health. We customize your plan to include nutrition information based on your weight, muscle mass, body fat, etc., hormone replacement therapy as needed, supplements to target specific issues, and monitor your progress as you implement the changes.
